The most inspirational figure in my life - my old man, wrote this...

PARKOUR

I am the wind rider, I am a free runner. I am the echo of the breeze
I am the rhythm that danced in this place long before these walls grew and told me I could no longer skip and play here.

I am the mist that spins when the wind blows and the smoke that curls when it does not.
I see your boundaries; but they are grey and dull, adding nothing to the coloured rivers that flow around my imagination.
When did you lose your colour? Where did you hide your vision? Perhaps I can help you find them.

I am the deer which springs - and the wolf that chases after, determined and focussed
The leap of the salmon – and the stoop of the eagle, snatching it from the water to sprinkle diamond scales across the sky.
I am Tao and Manitou

I am the dolphin spinning from the deep ocean in an effort to reach the moon.
I am the otter that chases only the fastest fish so as to fill his soul as well as his belly.

I am the flickering of a fire that burns no-one yet fuels my need to fly.
When the flame eventually dies I know the embers will warm me for a long time.

You see me as the Helm wind, the Sirocco, Mistral and Chinook the snow eater.
But I am only the grass that sways, a sycamore seed spinning through the air searching for a forgiving place upon which to land and grow.
I am new lifeblood, driven around the city by a heartbeat you no longer hear. A freshly risen sun, which challenges your naming of the seasons.
I am the languid curve - spray painted across these straight walls, that infuriates your sensibilities, by offence?
Or by reminding you that once, long ago, you were young and filled with vitality?

I want to be the smile that stills your shaking heads, the favourite picture of your children superimposed over a poster of Che Guevara.
To show you the flight of a swallow, not the path of a bullet. The sparkling of a whirlpool not the terror of a tornado.
A secret symphony of future creation that moves to the beat of rock and roll.
I am timeless, not new age. Ageless, not limited. Limitless.

I am the breath that, even as you turn to look slips around you and is gone.
The soft whistle of excitement you heard before time gently eased it from your memory.
I am that free spirit your youth embraced for five heartbeats. And now wishes it had been ten.

I leap and curl; float, spin and race. Sliding through concrete and steel
Parting it, as a fish through water. I am the swift river, the slow glacier, carving a route through the hard landscape.
Leaving no trace of my passing, just a ripple that gently fades.

Je suis le cavalier de vent, je suis le traceur.

The spinning stone that skips across the fragile surface of the water. Refusing to give in to gravity and be drawn down.
I am the memory of the first time you flew a kite and watched it hang against the clouds.
Energy unleashed, fear controlled.
If you are unable to join in the dance at least do not seek to end the music.

I am the Art, I am the Way. The legacy of Shigeru and the spirit of the Little Dragon.
A gibbon, travelling through the canopy of the urban jungle.
Running, leaping, moving, not because I must.
But because I can.

a quickie:

"there can be no true humanity, no true self-respect, without self reliance. no one can help you if you do not help yourselves. we do not promise anything for you, we do not want anything from you, we only appeal to your co-operationwith us to bring about a state of society which will make freedom, well-being possible for all. to do this efficiently, we must all be imbued with spirit of freedom and this - freedom, and freedom alone..."

i like the poem tim, very nice but on the grounds of ive just done my gcse's i refuse to analys it at all. this is my relax time :P
my release, my place of peace...

i like the words of wisdom in my sig at the bottom of this post. but also these

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it"

"Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion"

"Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare."

You may say that nothing is 'impossible', but realistically...you're wrong.

That poem is deep like the ocean and a main reason why I joined this forum instead of just lurking and turning up to training on Thursday. Thanks Tobu. Hope y'all like this;

"A human being is the only entity in the universe which is defined as much by that which it is not, as by that which it is. The human mind is the only entity we are aware of which constantly and consistently demonstrates the ability to transcend definition or limitation, escaping any attempt at reductive delineation.

Why is it then that human beings are also the the only entities in the universe which create and enforce these self-imposed definitions, reductions or limitations?
I believe it is an unconscious attempt to provoke an equal and opposite reaction. What do you believe?"
Aim for the goal and miss the target,
Aim for the target and achieve the goal
Practice is Perfect
Do, or Do Not, there is no Try

I like all of the above, just felt like adding a few of my own favourites...

"If you can find a path with no obsatcles, it probably doesn't lead anywhere"

"Impossibility and incredulity comes to those who do not believe, and the essence of possibility resides with those who dare to believe, dream, fail and get up to try it all over again..."

"Your reality is defined by what you deem possible, by what you believe. To change those beliefs is to change your reality."

"Reality is mearly an illusion, albeit a very pesistent one." - Albert Einstein

wow, i'd just like to say that I think that poem at the top, posted by Tobu is absolutely amazing. I don't usually like poetry but I really really like that. Your old man is awesome :)

also I think it expresses exactly what i love about parkour and ties in to a "parkour and the mind" discussion I was having with dave in another thread, called "open discussion"...

Parkour is not a sport but a way of life
"FreeRunning is life; it is in the blood that pumps through our veins, the air that we breathe, the touch in our finger tips & the vision to see our own paths." 3run

"The function of man is to live, not just to exist."
- Can't remember who said it.

"Fear can hold you prisoner,
Hope can set you free."

Two inspirational quotes for me.

This poem is one of my personal Vauvorites. I saw this whilst being told off by my headteacher.

[IF]

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

Considering im very new at this, to me already parkour is something new and intense which has begun to change my life, it is a positive activity, which means you can escape from the daily grind which has become modern society, clear your mind be free with you thoughts. For me hopefully i will be able to stay determined at this, because i really would love to, hopefully all the people who have helped me so far have been amazing, like my recuers if you ask me, ok now im babbling on. but yeh =]

"Even the strongest of iron is destroyed by its own rust"

I like it.. It shows how humanities natural instinct is self-destruction.. Parkour is a reason for me to stop that self destruction. Thanks to parkour I've quit smoking and drugs, and I'm drinking nowhere near as much alcohol, either. My diet's even improved. I'm actually trying to take care of myself now.
